Farmhouse at tumakuru, Karnataka

Farmhouse - A leisure abode away from the hustle and bustle of the Bengaluru city with a residence, party space, library, caretaker's quarters and an organic farm.

The Site is a farmland of 5 acres with natural contours stepping towards a pond with a bund acting as a barrier. The site has a natural drainage form in which the overflow of the pond flows into depressions in the contours.

Prerequisites of the client specify a small structure viewing the existing pond built with eco-friendly materials to host parties, to rest in the holidays and a small living quarters for a couple to reside and maintain the farmland.

Proposal at a Glance - As one enters into the vast site, the stone-paved driveway leads to the bund alongside the rainwater harvesting pond. An imposing brick facade wall with a floating balcony captures one's attention, that leads to a circular ramp which encircles the central courtyard.

Making a place - design process

The building has been lifted to a height above the bund and aligned along the lake so as to maximize the view. The farmhouse has been designed keeping in mind the passive techniques for energy consumption reduction such as cross-ventilation, orientation and stack effect(courtyard).

The central ramp cum courtyard separates the library which also opens out to both views of the lake and farmland. The courtyard facilitates the buffer between three major activity zones dining, library and party deck accessed through ramp consecutively. View of the lake is hidden from the courtyard and is unfolded as one enters the different zones.
